It co-ordinates, stimulates and balances the energies involved with the rectum, sex organs and the navel point.
This lock is frequently applied at the end of an exercise or an exercise series to crystallize its effects.
It can be done with either the breath in or out or is even done throughout a meditation or exercise.
It is usually applied in conjunction with Jalandhara Bandha or Neck lock.
Root lock blends prana and apana at the navel center and redirects apana energy from its normal downward flow to the first chakra and takes the energy upward.
When prana and apana meet at the navel a inner heat called Tapa is created which opens the entrance to your Sushmana.
This lock starts the process of transformation from the gross to the subtle, increases sexual vitality and stimulates the proper flow of spinal fluid.
Method:
First, contract the anal sphincter, feel it lift upward and inward (this is like trying to stop a bowel movement).
Second, contract the area around the sex organ (this is like trying to stop the flow of urine).
Third, contract the lower abdominal muscles and the navel point toward the spine.
